CHICHESTER AND RINGMER SHARE THE SPOILS AT OAKLANDS
 |
|
24/04/10: Chichester City
1 Ringmer 1 |
|

Chichester
City rounded off their County League home campaign with an entertaining 1-1 draw
against mid-table Ringmer on Saturday.
City manager Adie Girdler had a player crisis before the game and
had to call upon Reserve players Jamie Smith (pictured right), James Gregory and
Spencer Stent to shore up the gaps, as well as naming Assistant Manager Dave
Kelly as his only substitute. The first half was largely uneventful until
Ringmer Captain Mark Price opened the scoring on 44 minutes with a well taken
goal. Chichester veteran Dave Kelly came on at half-time for the injured
Gregory and City were back on level terms almost immediately following a
spectacular own goal. Joe Briggs crossed from the left and Ringmer defender
Brown volleyed the ball into his own net from ten yards. Brown almost
atoned for his earlier mistake with an inch perfect cross on 65 minutes but
Sowter just headed over and Ringmer substitute Patel also came close five
minutes later but fired just wide. Briggs had a strong penalty appeal
turned down on 80 minutes and a poor back pass by Aiden Bryan let in Sowter
moments later but City keeper Boyle made a fine save at the striker’s feet.
Boyle repeated the feat on 82 minutes when Sowter was once again in the clear
and soon after Jamie Smith crossed for Joe Briggs but his header glanced the
outside of the post. In the dying minutes, James Ford was brought down by
Miholay in the Ringmer box to earn City a penalty and Mark Price was
subsequently shown a straight red card for abusive protest. City stalwart Dave
Kelly stepped up to take the spot kick but his effort smashed the post and
Chichester
had to settle for a share of the spoils.

PEACEHAVEN WIN BATTLE FOR COUNTY LEAGUE RUNNERS-UP
 |
|
17/04/10: Chichester City
1 Peacehaven & Telscombe 3 |
|

Peacehaven &
Telscombe won the battle for the County League runners-up spot with an
impressive 3-1 victory at Oaklands Park on Saturday. Despite falling a goal behind and
playing the last five minutes with only ten men, the visitors always looked like
they were going to grind out a result in the humid conditions. Chichester
started the game quite brightly and James Temple showed some neat footwork in
the Peacehaven box to set up James Searle but the City midfielder wasted his
chance from ten yards. At the other end, Tom Levitt took the ball around
Tom Boyle in the City goal but he was forced out wide and his deep cross went
out for a goal-kick. On the half hour mark, Joe Briggs played through
James Temple but the tall centre forward was stopped in his tracks by the
advancing Jake Buss, who received a yellow card for his misdemeanor. Adrian
Brockway (pictured above) hit the resulting free-kick straight at the wall but
he then smashed the rebound into the top corner of the net to give City a 1-0
lead. Rob O’Toole put Peacehaven back on level terms just before half-time
after heading in from close range following some neat approach play by Snell and
Burton. Tom Burton should have given the visitors the lead on 56 minutes
but just volleyed wide and then on 63 minutes a James Ford 40-yard effort was
just tipped over by Buss. Tom Levitt put Peacehaven in front when taking
the ball around Boyle and slotting home from an acute angle on 75 minutes and
the game was made safe following a controversial penalty decision minutes later.
Tom Burton was clean through on goal and his effort appeared to be saved by
Boyle on the line but the referee’s view of the incident was markedly different
as he penalised James Ford for hand ball. Ford received a yellow card for his
troubles as did Boyle who squirted a bottle of water at Callum Saunders prior to the Peacehaven midfielder converting the penalty. Craig Hall was harshly sent
off for Peacehaven five minutes from time for an innocuous looking foul and
subsequent verbal remonstration but the game was already over by then.
Chichester entertain Ringmer this Saturday in their final home game of the
season and they complete their campaign with a trip to Lingfield the week after.

CHI BACK ON TOP AFTER KNOCKING FOUR PAST ARUNDEL
 |
|
05/04/10: Chichester City
4 Arundel 1 |
|

Chichester City
returned to top of the County League after cruising to a 4-1
victory over Arundel at Oaklands Park on Easter Monday.
Championship rivals Peacehaven and Whitehawk fought out a
goalless draw at the Sports Park which leaves Chichester one
point clear, although the Hawks do have five games in hand and
will be hungry for success after losing their FA Vase semi-final
against Wroxham. Callum Cutler opened the scoring for
Chichester on 32 minutes with a 25 yard effort which deflected
past former City keeper Ben O'Connor in the Arundel goal.
A minute later O'Connor brought down James Temple on the edge of
the box and Barry McCoy made no mistake in doubling City's lead
from the penalty spot. Arundel pulled one back 5 minutes
before the interval when the referee penalised McCoy for pulling
down Scott Tipper in the City area and Tipper himself stepped up
to score the penalty. James Temple created Chichester's third
goal on 52 minutes with an inch perfect cross that James Ford
willingly slotted home at the far post after Cutler had somehow
missed the ball when better placed. Former City winger
Russell Hardwell was the one shining star in Arundel's
lacklustre performance and he produced two inch perfect crosses
around the 60 minute mark. Howard Neighbor blasted the first
chance over the bar and Tipper wasted the second chance when
heading wide from six yards out. Richie Towers went for
broke soon after when introducing all three substitutes but it
was Chichester substitute Matthew Cooper that made the bigger
impact when he came on for Jason Minton after 65 minutes.
Cooper's first touch was a 25 yard effort which O'Connor pushed
around the post and then Cutler's corner was glanced home by
James Temple at the near post. Temple pushed another
effort wide in the final minutes but the game was already over
by then and Arundel now find themselves deep in relegation
trouble with a backlog of fixtures to complete.

CHICHESTER RETURN TO FORM AT EASTBOURNE UNITED
 |
|
27/03/10: Eastbourne United 0 Chichester City
3 |
|

Chichester
City put their recent poor form behind them with a strong performance to win 3-0
on the ground of the reigning Sussex County League Champions, Eastbourne United.
Eastbourne are not quite the force they were but are still well placed and
victory will have rekindled City’s hopes of a top three finish.
Ben Vassallo had an early chance for City
but skied his shot and Shawn Benjamin also went close with a header from Adrian
Brockway’s corner before the visitors took a 24th minute lead.
Vassallo was through on goal only to be upended by goalkeeper, Gavin Richards,
and Brockway converted the ensuing penalty. Ten minutes later City
extended their lead with a top quality goal from Lee Mullen. A Jason Minton
throw in was headed on by Jamie Ford and fell kindly for Mullen to volley the
ball well beyond Richards from 20 yards. Steve Dallaway then missed a
decent chance for
Eastbourne before the home side made a goalkeeping
switch at half time. Defending a 2-0 lead City weren’t too adventurous
after the interval but offered
Eastbourne a
good chance to get back in the game when Spencer Sturt fouled substitute James
McKenzie to concede the second penalty of the game. However Danny Andrews was
less effective with his spot kick and City goalkeeper Tom Boyle dived to his
left to block Andrews’ effort.
Right at the end City had the final word
with the best move of the game as substitute James Searle swept the ball wide to
James Temple for Vassallo to get inside his marker and turn the cross from the
right past the stranded goalkeeper. City remain second in the table.

TWO WINS FOR THE PRICE OF ONE AS LADIES BEAT HAWKS
 |
|
21/03/10: Whitehawk 1 Chichester
Ladies 5 |
|
Chichester Ladies travelled to
Brighton in an unusual fixture
that would settle two results over 90 minutes. The match against Whitehawk
counted for a league game as well as a cup semi final. This top of the table
clash was set to be a great game with both sides battling hard for every ball.
Chichester took an early lead with a great individual effort from Bourn who
smashed home from close range. One of many obscure refereeing decisions gave
Whitehawk a free kick to close to the Chichester 18 yard box, after a scrappy
attempt to clear the ball Bernard was beaten. This was to prove to be the last
time as the keeper was sensational from this point onwards. Soon Chichester
regained the lead when Parker delivered in an outstanding corner which Pike
snuck in on the back post. The second half became a one sided affair as the
Chichester girls added to their tally with Bourn, Shrubb and Streeter all
scoring. The match was won through hard work and determination proving that
Chichester are able to scrap when needed. It will be a great end to
the season as the Chi girls close down the top spot and now have a cup final to
look forward to.

CHICHESTERS POOR RECENT FORM CONTINUES
 |
|
20/03/10: Crawley Down 2 Chichester City
1 |
|

Chichester City’s recent dip in form continued with their third consecutive away
defeat, this time on a waterlogged and barely playable pitch at Crawley Down.
City failed to take advantage of the wind and slope in their favour in the first
half and a narrow one goal interval lead neither reflected their possession or
the cushion they would need in the second period. Jason Minton eventually
put City in front after more than 40 minutes of pressure on the home goal with a
well struck left foot drive after James Ford’s cross wasn’t properly cleared.
But as the players traipsed off at half time Crawley Down probably felt they
were still well in contention with conditions in their favour after the break.
Adrian Brockway might have extended the City lead immediately after the
resumption but the balance of play had shifted and on 56 minutes City made a
mess of a corner on the right and Sam Cane headed in the equaliser. Ten
more minutes and Crawley Down were ahead as Tom Boyle in the City goal made one
sharp stop to save a Tony Reid header only to be beaten by another header from
the same player moments later. With over 20 minutes to save the game City hardly
mustered a decent shot on goal with a deflected shot by substitute Tim Harruna
being the sum of their efforts. City remain second in the table but the
pack is closing in and they face three further away games before returning to
Oaklands Park.
