Chichester
ladies had a memorable day trip to Eastbourne on Sunday with both senior teams
enjoying notable cup success. The first team played against Eastbourne Town in
the 2nd round of the South East Counties League Cup and earned a hard fought
victory in extra time thanks to a goal from Shrubb. The Ladies Reserves team
also had to wait until extra time to beat Eastbourne Borough in the semi-final
of the Sussex Womens Cup, Clarke (2) and Smith scoring the goals in a 3-1
victory. The Reserves now play Rottingdean Village in the final at Crawley Down
on Thursday night KO 19:30. The U15 Girls team also played in a cup semi-final
on Sunday but they came unstuck against a strong Seahaven Harriers team who
prevailed 3-0 on the day. Full Reports

TWO CITY PLAYERS OFF AS REDHILL MAINTAIN CHALLENGE
 |
|
06/03/10: Redhill 2 Chichester City

|

Chichester City’s four match
winning sequence was ended at Redhill on Saturday as the hosts maintained their
challenge at the top of the table with a 2-0 victory.
City drafted in central defender Shawn Benjamin (pictured
right) as an emergency goalkeeper and the stand-in made a passable if unorthodox
deputy. City were also without striker James Temple which meant a rare start for
Michael Long and a bit of a reshuffle amongst the regular outfield players.
The bright sunshine disguised a chilly afternoon and there were plenty of long
ball tactics from both sides on a sticky surface with the game effectively
decided in fifteen first half minutes. Redhill got the ball rolling with a
19th minute goal from Daniel Morris who turned into space and drilled
a low shot inside Benjamin’s near post. City almost immediately had a
chance to level as home goalkeeper, Chris May, felled James Archer in the
penalty area to concede a spot kick with Archer through on goal. May was booked
but must have thought his misdemeanour was worthwhile when he blocked Adrian
Brockway’s penalty kick and the ball was scrambled away to safety. Within
minutes Redhill had a penalty at the other end as James Ford fouled Morris and
the Redhill striker thumped his shot past Benjamin to demonstrate how it should
be done. 2-0. Morris squandered a good chance for his hat-trick soon after
the interval but there wasn’t much to redeem a scrappy second half mainly
notable for a spate of bookings and two sendings off for City near the end as
referee, James Harding, enforced the laws of the game. Callum Cutler was the
first to go for a second bookable offence and Joe Briggs followed him shortly
afterwards. Both players were guilty of querying some of the refereeing
decisions. Report written by Trevor Wallis

CHICHESTER COMPLETE LEAGUE DOUBLE OVER SHOREHAM
 |
|
03/03/10: Chichester City
3 Shoreham 1 |
|
A battling
performance from Shoreham ended with them going down 3-1 to Chichester, who are
determined to challenge big spending Whitehawk in the race for the league title.
Shoreham started with a 5-4-1 formation, the plan being to defend well and try
to score on the counter-attack. Simon Lockwood, lately of Horsham YMCA
deputised in goal for Michael Hunter and was solid throughout. In a makeshift
defence, joint-manager, Mark Burt started for the first time and rolled away the
years with an outstanding performance before coming off in the second half.

CHI BACK ON TOP AFTER COMFORTABLE LINGFIELD VICTORY
 |
|
27/02/10: Chichester City
4 Lingfield 0 |

Chichester City moved back to
the top of the Sussex County League with a comfortable 4-0 victory over visiting
Lingfield on Saturday. City now have a three point advantage over closest
rivals, Whitehawk. The Brighton side have five games in hand but they face a
considerable fixture backlog and a two leg FA Vase semi-final in the last few
weeks of the season that may yet influence the outcome of the Title race.
Assistant manager, Dave Kelly commented “we’re back on top, now we just have to
keep going and see what happens.”
To their credit the visitors made a lively start and there
were several close squeaks for the City defence before the home side went ahead
on 24 minutes. James Temple burst down the left leaving a stream of defenders in
his wake before setting up Callum Cutler (pictured above) to drive the ball into
the bottom right hand corner of the net. Ben Hitchman in the City goal
then made a point blank save at the other end to deny Pani Oritis an equaliser
and preserve the City advantage to the half time interval. Lingfield
seemed suitably energised by their half time refreshments and pep talk and
stretched the City defence before their challenge crumbled in a disasterous ten
minute spell around the hour mark. Shawn Benjamin started City’s goal rush by
stooping low to head home a Joe Briggs cross and then provided the through pass
that enabled Ben Vassallo to set up the third for Cutler. With Lingfield
now in disarray Temple
blasted in a fourth from close range and it was all over.
Cutler then saw a curling free kick beaten away by Adam
Woodward in the Lingfield goal that would have completed his hat-trick and
substitute Michael Long toe ended a decent chance just past the post.
Hitchman also frustrated any hope of a Lingfield consolation with a flying save
to turn a dipping shot from Ansell around the post.
