09/03/2004 - Chichester City United 2 Worthing United 1 (Charity Cup 2nd Rnd)

Chichester progressed through to the semi-finals of the Brighton Charity Cup following a low-key encounter with Second Division Worthing United on Tuesday night.

Youth team player Matt Day made his debut for Chichester, in a game where both sides fielded under-strength line-ups.

It took just two minutes to break the deadlock, with Roger Moore picking up a right-wing cross and finding the target for the hosts.

The match then took a fairly uneventful path, with Chichester continually mounting challenges on their opponents without ever delivering the final finish.

It wasn't until early in the second-half that Worthing United managed to settle down the pace, and their reward came on 64 minutes. Giant centre-forward Adam Westwood turned on the edge of the penalty box and unleashed a thunderbolt that crashed in off the post.

Immediately from the restart, Chichester winger Lewis Fennemore made a quick charge into the Worthing United half, received the ball, and sliced home from 20 yards with defenders still taking up their positions.

Worthing United boss Ian Browne responded by bringing on himself as an extra striker for the closing stages, but the ex-Northern Premier League player was guilty of one of the most horrendous misses imaginable when he sent a late effort sky high.

In the end it was a satisfying result for City, who ended Worthing United's run of eight games unbeaten. On Saturday, it is back down to more serious business when East Grinstead visit Church Road as the battle for the league title continues.
