City Come From Behind to Beat Oakwood in Extra Time

Chichester City had to come from two goals down to beat Oakwood 4-2 after extra time in their Third Round Sussex RUR Charity Cup tie at Church Road on Saturday.

City now have a Quarter Final tie with Crawley Down on a date to be arranged.

Oakwood belied their lowly League position with a lively first half performance and twice caught City on the counter attack. The visitors took the lead after just 11 minutes with practically their first venture upfield as City lost possession at a throw in on the left and as the ball was switched across to the opposite flank Mark Heavens advanced unchallenged to beat Barry Squires from the edge of the penalty area with a shot in off the post.

City continued to press forward but there was some wasteful finishing and the game seemed to be slipping beyond them when Oakwood broke away for a second goal on the stroke of half time. Once again sloppy possession cost City dearly as Russ Hardwell misplaced his pass almost on the visitors' goal line and Steve Best was allowed to gallop upfield and angle his shot beyond Squires.

Roger Moore missed a good chance at the start of the second half but two goals in the space of a minute let City right back into the game. With the hour mark approaching Woodbarn impeded Mark Jackson and Scott Tipper glanced Hardwell's free kick into the far corner of the net for his tenth goal of the season. Within a minute the unfortunate Woodbarn had bowled over Moore in the six yard box and Paul Thomas put City level from the penalty spot.

Almost immediately Oakwood goalkeeper, Mike Wood clawed a Moore free kick out from under the crossbar as City started to look the more likely winners.

Even so City couldn't finish the job in normal time and the teams turned round again for an extra half hour. But just three minutes into extra time City got their noses in front as Moore finally got the better of the offside trap that had frustrated the home forwards all afternoon and clipped the ball past Wood to claim his 100th senior goal in City colours.

Substitute Midi Dedegbe burst into space to thump in a fourth before the extra time interval and a weary looking Oakwood side were on their way out of the Cup.

City manager, Adie Girdler admitted 'we needed that victory to keep our season alive and now we need to start picking up some League points.'

The full Quarter Final draw for the Sussex RUR Cup is Midhurst v. Rye, Ringmer v. Whitehawk, Chichester v. Crawley Down and Eastbourne Town v. East Grinstead.
